How It Works
This calculator adds purchase price, projected fuel or electricity cost, and maintenance over your chosen ownership period for each vehicle. Running cost is worked out as (annual miles ÷ efficiency) × price per unit, multiplied by your ownership years, then combined with maintenance to reveal the true long-term cost.

The results are estimates based only on the numbers you enter. They exclude financing, insurance, taxes, registration, and resale value, so treat them as a directional comparison rather than an exact budget.
It uses a single average electricity price and efficiency figure that you set. If you charge at public stations that cost more than home charging, raise the electricity price input to reflect your real blended rate.
A hybrid still burns fuel every year, so even at strong MPG that cost keeps adding up. Over a longer ownership period or higher annual mileage, an EV’s lower running cost can overtake the hybrid’s smaller purchase-price gap.
Yes, as a starting point. It models individual ownership costs only, so for fleet or business use you’ll also want to factor in tax incentives, depreciation schedules, and any maintenance contracts, which this tool doesn’t include.
