U.S. Safety Agency Deepens Probe Into Tesla Driver-Assist System Over Visibility Concerns

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has expanded its investigation into Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving” (FSD) technology, raising fresh concerns about how the system performs in low-visibility conditions.

According to recent filings, the probe now covers roughly 3.2 million Tesla vehicles, including the Tesla Model S, Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model X, Tesla Model Y, and the Tesla Cybertruck. Investigators are examining whether the system adequately responds when visibility is reduced by factors such as fog, glare, or airborne particles.

The agency noted that in several reported incidents, the software may not have properly identified road hazards or alerted drivers when camera performance was compromised. Some crashes under review occurred shortly after the system had been engaged.

The inquiry has now advanced to an “engineering analysis,” a step that signals a more detailed technical review and could lead to further regulatory action depending on the findings.
